Aquaculture

The Lugworm Our blast-frozen maturation diet starts with the polychaete Nereis virens but, by utilising a unique production process, Shoreline produces a highly enhanced product too good to be called a worm and far better and more reliable in quality than can be achieved in the wild or from uncontrolled production processes that mimic nature.

A well balanced diet including essential fatty acids is needed to produce well developed high quality eggs, and also for successful embryonic development, hatching, larval performance and immune system development. This degree of nutrition and performance is offered by Shoreline's off-the-shelf maturation diet. Follow the link opposite for nutritional analysis.

Nutritional Analysis

Protein and Lipid

Shoreline Sustainable Feed works with its customers to tailor products to meet specific requirements. High control and optimum conditions enable us to maximise the quality of the product and protein levels amount to 55% of dry weight. Lipid levels are enriched to twice those found in worms grown in wild conditions, and many times greater than those found in warm water worm species.

Fatty Acids

FAME analysis shows that the worms contain high concentrations of all of the essential PUFAs and HUFAs. Major fatty acids present include: Linolenic acid (18:3 n3) Arachidonic acid (ARA 20:4 n-6) Docosahexanoic acid (DHA 22:6 n-3) Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA 20:5 n-3) Linoleic acid (18:2 n-6). Having been grown in strictly controlled conditions, our maturation diet is free of contamination from heavy metals and tropical shrimp pathogens.

Advantages

Biosecurity

The UK farm is situated 55ºN on the North Sea coast of England, thousands of kilometres away from all known shrimp diseases. The worms are farmed under intensive conditions in isolated and closely monitored beds, ensuring good health and low risk. Strict hygiene and traceable feed sources ensure a safe product which is free of shrimp or land animal products, including beef.

The farm operates indoors with a closely monitored recirculation system minimising the presence of other marine organisms.

Products for aquaculture are tested Specific Pathogen Free for major shrimp and fish diseases. Fish Disease analysis completed at Stirling University and Shrimp disease and virus analysis at University of Arizona.

Quality and Reliability

Tonnes of worms of uniformly high quality are produced every month of the year. Shoreline Sustainable Feed quick frozen worms offer quality and year-round reliability at consistent prices to a worldwide market - using technology developed to service the live bait market, where freshness and quick response to orders is essential.

Packing

Our maturation diet is blast frozen live on-site to guarantee minimum risk of contamination and maximum shelf life. The flat packaging allows quick freezing and quick defrosting with minimal fluid loss. Compared with other sources of polychaete diet this constitutes a saving of between 15% and 50% per unit of feed purchased.

Naturally Palatable

Marine worms are at the base of many food chains and are a natural component in the diet of many marine organisms. The ragworm is a soft bodied worm with high levels of digestible protein and a very thin cuticle, rendering it very easy to eat. In the experience of aquaculture specialists all over the world, fish and shrimp love the Shoreline Sustainable Feed diet.

High Nutritional Content

Analysis at the University of Newcastle-Upon-Tyne has shown that the lipid content of our ragworms is significantly greater than that of wild stocks of similar species.
